Xp install hangs on installing devices

I have just brought a new AMD inspiron machine from Dell which obviously came with Vista which i obviously dont want to keep just yet, untill service pack 1 comes at least.
Last reply by jamez kann Unsolved. Everything goes fine at first, but the installation appears to hang on "Installing Windows" with 33 minutes remaining, at the point where the message above the progress bar says "Installing Devices".
It has been sitting this way for the last hour, cycling through the pretty slides on the rh side of the screen. I have reset the boot order so it boots from the CD first. I have read as many messages as I can that appear to deal with the problem, and the only possibly relevant one that talks about problems while installing devices is a message about upgrading the BIOS. I would install from the CD shipped with the computer, but I can't find it. If there is a problem with the BIOS, I will need instructions on upgrading it I have access to the net from the newer machine.
