Miller thunderbolt xl 300/200 manual
Where do IU start from here? Thanks for your help! Jun 6, 2. RPW Veteran Member. Joined Aug 12, Messages 1, Welcome aboard. You've go a good start. Those rods generally will be used on DC. Depending on the size of rods will determine the amperage you'll use. You can find the basic amp range on the package of rods or by doing a search on the net.
Keep in mind this is a ball park and it also depends on what you're welding and the position of the weld. Get yourself some scape steel plate and start by doing some stringers which is simply making a straight line weld to practice your posistion and speed. This is just a starter and have fun. Jun 7, 3. You can also run some brands of on AC, but they generally run better on DC. Since you have both, you will probably end up leaving it on DC most of the time since there is less spatter and maybe a little smoother.
And DC will handle just about every rod there is. Jun 7, 4. JB Super Member. It's gonna be a little bit of a shock to you even on DC, as there is alot more going on than with a MIG. There are quite a few and not rare, many come with lots of goodies but most need a power. My first attempt at "better" tig gear was putting that same HF box on my thunderbolt. It worked, but was very limited. In fact, so limited that I've never used it for more than some practice beads on aluminum plate.
I'm not familiar with the machine you're talking about, the thunder bolt XL, but if it does not have the remote amperage control capability, you're wasting your time, you will not be happy with it for aluminum and you don't really "need" it for steel or stainless when there are plenty of X-ray quality welds going down with the scratch start method.
I wasn't the first to attempt using a HF box on a thunderbolt, you weren't the second and certainly won't be the last. If you had to tig weld some aluminum together to save the imminent destruction of planet earth, you could do this. Otherwise, save your money and get something a little better. I have a Thunderbolt XL. Great little stick machine. It does not have the capability for remote amperage control. Aside from the serious limitations of using this machine for TIG that others have mentioned Know Your Serial Number?
